Our First Yoga Read

For our first Yoga Read we thought it fitting to start off with:

Ways of Yoga by Gurani Anjali, Founder, Yoga Anand Ashram

Gurani Anjali, more commonly known as Guruma, taught Raja Yoga, or the 8 fold path, as delineated in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.  This path includes the following practices: ethical (Yama/Niyama), posture (Asana),  breathing (Pranayama), withdrawal of the senses (Pratyahara), concentration (Dharana), meditation (Dhyana), and absorption (Samadhi).

Being a mother, artist, business owner, and having had a great sense of humor made her teachings profound, yet pragmatic and workable.  The offerings in this book provide the reader with a direct experience of the yogic vision.  Her observations on seemingly mundane situations bring a sense that all experiences are fleeting.  This realization comes from a deep awareness of the Self, often referred to as liberation, moksha, kaivalyam, or self-realization.

Her teachings were focused on experiencing the abundance and fulfillment that life has to offer.  Guruma was dedicated to walking the path and enlightened many people along the way.  When reading these essays, allow them the time to move and inspire you.

Om Shanti, Peace to all!

I was introduced to this book when I first became a student at the ashram.
I find it to be as profound a tool now as it was for me then. I have come back to this book many times over the years. I see it is a gift from Gurani Anjali to all of us on the path. Having never met her personally, I can honestly say that her teachings and her writings have touched me more deeply than anyone I have ever actually met. I encourage anyone who hasn’t read this book or is looking to go deeper into their practice to pick up a copy! It is very practical and accessible. Enjoy the read. Would love to hear about your favorite part! We all have one! Mine is The Power of Sacrifice.
